The Abbey Inn, the latest opening from The Tommy Banks Group, opened its doors in May 2023. Boasting views of the gothic ruins of the historic Byland Abbey, the relaxed pub has 70-covers and three luxury bedrooms. The sustainable ethos The Tommy Banks Group is renowned for is at the core of what The Abbey Inn does with the produce grown and reared on the family’s farm in Oldstead informing the menu. Having owned and farmed the land for generations, the Banks practice Regenerative Agriculture, working to reverse the impacts of the ecological damage caused by the industrial food system and ensure that the farm has longevity.
During the month of January, The Abbey Inn offers a Reganuary Menu, which acts to raise awareness of the impact of the food system on the land, while showcasing the best of the farm including grass-fed Dexter beef, rare-breed pigs and more. In March 2024 The Abbey Inn was awarded the Top New Restaurant in Yorkshire at Condé Nast Traveler Awards UK and in January 2025, it won the Estrela Damm Sustainable Pub of the Year, rose to no. 27 in the Top 50 Gastropubs List, and was crowned Best Sunday Roast by Good Food Guide.
In 2025, Tommy Banks joined forces with Matthew Lockwood, his brother James Banks, and entrepreneur Neil Armstrong to launch Jeopardy Hospitality - a new venture dedicated to restoring and reopening historic pubs across the UK. Rooted in a passion for great food and genuine hospitality, the group is focused on celebrating each venue's character while strengthening community ties, creating jobs, and championing local suppliers.
